If you’re applying to English-speaking universities, these tests prove you can thrive in an academic environment. A strong IELTS or TOEFL score boosts your chances of admission and even scholarships.
The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is commonly required for countries like the UK, Australia, and Canada. It tests your listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills and is available in both paper-based and computer-delivered formats.
One unique aspect of the IELTS is its speaking test, which is conducted face-to-face with a certified examiner. There are two types of IELTS exams: Academic, which is used for university admissions, and General Training, often used for work or migration purposes.
IELTS scores are given in bands from 0 to 9, and most universities look for a minimum score between 6.5 and 7.5, depending on the program.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is especially popular with universities in the United States and is fully computer-based — including the speaking section, which is recorded and assessed by raters. Like IELTS, TOEFL also evaluates your reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills, but the test format and scoring are slightly different.
TOEFL scores range from 0 to 120, and top-tier institutions often expect a score of 100 or more. If you’re someone who prefers using a computer or is aiming for U.S. institutions, TOEFL might be the better fit.
